BanG Dream!(バンドリ!)- Girl Band Dream
Season 2

~*X*~

Part 2 of the article; this time we’ll be covering the anime’s second season.

BanG Dream’s (Bandori) season 2 is unique.

Unlike other series where if you fail to watch the first season, you will not be able to fully comprehend and appreciate what the second season has to offer.
But for Bandori, even if you have yet to watch the first season (or even play the smartphone game for that matter) it is still kind and forgiving enough that you won’t be missing out much (to anything at all).
It’s written out nicely such that anyone that is new to the franchise and wants’s to see all five bands from the get-go, can do so.

Given how the second season of the anime is released an estimated 2 years after the smartphone game, it should be of no surprise that all of the bands featured in the game would be heavily featured in this season (they did make cameo appearances in the first season).

To re-cap, apart from the band we grew together with in the first season “Poppin’ Party” (PoPiPa), there are four other bands present in the franchise.
Including PoPiPa, five bands are known:

  • Poppin’ Party” (PoPiPa) – A band that aims to shine like the stars in the night sky. They are still inexperienced, but more than makeup for it with their passion.
Their songs have a cheerful, energetic j-pop sound.

  • Roselia” – An elite band with incredible talent and a fierce drive to reach the very top of the music world. They view themselves as professionals who hold themselves and others to infamously high standards.
Their style is powerful, Gothic J-rock.
Roselia”
  • “Afterglow” – A band formed by five childhood friends as a way to always stay together, their powerful bond comes through in their music.
Their songs have a rebellious and emotional alt-rock style.
“Afterglow”
  • “Pastel*Palettes” (PasuPare) – Originally formed as an “idol band” by a talent agency, these five girls resolved to be legitimate musicians and change the public perception of what an idol should be.
    Their style is idol-inspired.
“Pastel*Palettes” (PasuPare)
  • “Hello, Happy World!” (Hello Happy) – A very unique band on a mission to bring smiles to the entire world. Their gigs are mostly for younger audiences, but there’s no denying the universal appeal of their cheer.
Their style is happy and eccentric J-pop.

Each band comprises of musicians with unique personalities that complement and make the band special.

What is in the “BanG Dream!”: Anime S2 ??

Taking place a year after the events of season 1, the members of PoPiPa are now in their second year of high-school.

As the new senior’s in the school, a new set of challenges await them; Student Council duties, Cram School, and their part-time jobs. Furthermore, the members of PoPiPa are now split into different classes.
Due to this, the amount of time they can spend together is shortned.

This, however, does not stop them from making music together as a band. We see them grow to become even better musicians, but most importantly deepen their friendship with each other.

Throughout the season, we get to see all five bands and what they are about.
From how some have reached a point where they can organise self-live’s, to everyday struggles a high-school girl in a band will face. Not to mention, their goals/aims for the future and their band history.

Apart from the five bands mentioned above, this season presented us with an equally strong antagonist band; if not stronger, producing music that is both unique and powerful:

  • “RAISE A SUILEN” (RAS) – Initially called THE THIRD (仮) because they were the third band of the franchise to perform live.
Their original songs blend hard rock with electronica.

Why it works ??

It can be noted that even though the story progressed forward in a way favouring PoPiPa as to how they were going fulfil a promise set out early in the series; unlike the first season where the focal point was on PoPiPa, in season two all five bands share an equal amount of the spotlight.

Showing us a bit of the five different band’s development is what makes the second season so forgiving as it gives the viewer a chance to learn a bit about the bands.

It is heartwarming to see how even though they all come from very different bands, the friendships forged from their time together in school, helped bring together the bands to support and help each other whether it be during LIVE’s or their daily lives.

Not forgetting how comical season 2 was. It has a nice mix of times where it is serious, yet care-free and humorous. Seeing the antics of the different band members can help put on smile on anybody’s face.

Why should you watch it ??

If you have watched the first season it is only a must that you watch the second season as well as you get to see how far PoPiPa has progressed.

If you, however, have not watched the first season, read the manga nor played the smartphone, and are wondering if you can straight watch season 2; by all means, sure why not.
The series doesn’t alienate you as a newcomer but instead tries it’s best to introduce you to what it has to offer.

In Summary~

Bandori’s second season introduces new bands that are accompanied with eargasmic songs. Want to watch a show with cute girls performing in a band; this is it~
